Opening Reception: Dec 15, 5-7pm

Winter Gallery Hours: Thursday – Sunday, 10am – 4pm (Gallery opens at 5pm on Dec 15)
This exhibition features four immigrant artists whose work combines traditional media and process with unexpected approaches and juxtapositions. Highlighting artistic boldness tempered with subtlety and self-awareness, Material as Metaphor promises to delight the eye and intrigue the soul.
Material is a central feature of each artist’s work, but is never an end in itself. Kristen Soller’s background in psychology informs her understated woven pieces, which she describes as “actors on a stage,” playing out complex relationships. Meanwhile, Carolina Cueva emphasizes process and exploration, deliberately working “outside the confines of a narrative” to create enigmatic, multilayered paintings and sculptures. Feathers, found photographs, maps, and anatomical drawings come together in Miriam Omura’s mysterious, poetic assemblage and installation work, while Kira Tippenhauer skillfully weaves together hard stoneware and soft fibers in her iconic hand-built footed pots.
Please note that this exhibition is accompanied by multiple events. Join us at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center for an opening reception on Saturday, December 15 from 5-7pm. Mark your calendars for the artist reception and talk by curator Kira Tippenhauer on Saturday, January 19, from 5-7pm.

Port Townsend photographer and mixed media artist Dana Weir will present “Time Present and Time Past,” a solo exhibition of new and recent work, at The Gallery at Grace on Bainbridge Island, Wash.
The exhibition will run January 6 through February 24, 2019, with an artist’s reception at 11 am Sunday, January 13.
About the Artist
“As I explore the process of making images, I find that I am also exploring the construction of the spiritual self. When engaged in art making, I am encountering the world through a sense of wonder and a concern for contrasts. I am inspired by the tensions between permanence and fragility, wilderness and wasteland, beauty and decay. I enjoy searching for unity among a collection of broken and forgotten things.” – Dana Weir
Based in Port Townsend, Dana Weir has exhibited her work in invitational and juried shows in Oregon and Washington, most recently at the Northwind Arts Center and the Port Townsend School of the Arts Downtown Gallery. Dana teaches art to students of all ages and is the art specialist at The Island School on Bainbridge Island.
